São Paulo Biennial

The São Paulo Art Biennial was founded in 1951 and has been held every two years since. It is the third oldest art biennial in the world after the Venice Biennale and the Menton Biennale, which serves as its role model. Source: Wikipedia

Founded in 1951 by Italian-Brazilian industrialist Francisco “Ciccillo” Matarazzo, the Bienal de São Paulo emerged from Brazil's post-war ambition to take a central seat in international cultural dialogue. Since 1957 it has been housed in Oscar Niemeyer's modernist pavilion in Ibirapuera Park. Across 35 editions and more than 16,000 artists from 170 countries, it has tracked Brazil's own trajectory — from developmentalist optimism through dictatorship and democratic struggle — and remained one of the few major biennials with permanently free admission.
