Art Gallery of Ontario
The Art Gallery of Ontario, founded in 1900, is one of the largest art museums in North America. Its building was transformed in 2008 by Toronto-born architect Frank Gehry, who added a sweeping wood-and-glass facade and reorganized the galleries around natural light. While the AGO is encyclopedic in scope, it maintains substantial strengths and an active program in modern and contemporary art, including a significant and growing commitment to Canadian and Indigenous contemporary artists. Its collection spans European and Canadian historical art through to ambitious recent commissions. The AGO's relevance lies in its standing as Canada's most prominent art museum and an important contemporary venue. Its inclusion fills a notable geographic gap, giving Canada representation in a global directory.
