New Museum
The New Museum, founded in 1977 by curator Marcia Tucker, is the only museum in New York City devoted exclusively to contemporary art. Since 2007 it has occupied a stack of off-set aluminum-mesh boxes on the Bowery designed by Tokyo architects SANAA (Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa). Without a permanent collection, the museum focuses on new art and new ideas from around the world, supporting emerging artists, hosting the triennial survey of early-career international artists, and operating the cultural incubator NEW INC. A major expansion by OMA is underway.
