Punta della Dogana — Pinault Collection
Punta della Dogana opened in 2009 in Venice's former sea customs house, at the tip of the Dorsoduro district, restored with characteristic restraint by Japanese architect Tadao Ando. It presents the contemporary collection of French businessman François Pinault, alongside the nearby Palazzo Grassi. The Pinault Collection is among the largest private holdings of contemporary art in the world, and its Venice venues stage ambitious thematic and monographic exhibitions. The collection has since expanded to a third venue, the Bourse de Commerce in Paris, which opened in 2021. For a biennale-focused directory, this entry is especially relevant: located in Venice, home of the world's most important art biennale, it anchors the city's contemporary art presence on a year-round basis.
Punta della Dogana is an art museum in one of Venice's old customs buildings, the Dogana da Mar. It also refers to the triangular area of Venice where the Grand Canal meets the Giudecca Canal, and its collection of buildings: the church of Santa Maria della Salute,, the Patriarchal Seminary of Venice, and Dogana da Mar at the triangle's tip.
