Havana Biennial
Influential platform for contemporary art from Latin America, Africa, and Asia
Established in 1984 by the Centro Wifredo Lam in Habana Vieja, the Bienal de La Habana was conceived as the first major biennial explicitly dedicated to artists from Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and the Middle East — a deliberate counter-model to Venice, documenta and São Paulo at the height of the Cold War. Across four decades it has navigated the Special Period, the rise of an international market presence in the 2000s, and ongoing tensions between state-sanctioned and independent cultural production.
